Music

We all know music is powerful. It can shift moods, bring people together and, oddly enough, bring meaning to one’s life. Everyone has that one song that speaks to them, might it be a classic or some vulgar rap about wet things. I know people can find comfort in words or the sound of instruments. I hold multiple songs near my heart since they remind me of a character that I created or a fond memory that guides my happiness.

A fun example is the song Waves by Dean Lewis; this is a masterpiece since it reminds me entirely of the plot of my first book. I can close my eyes and see a scene of my book, and if my book turns to animation, I want this song to be part of it somehow. Every time I listen to the first strum of the guitar, I instantly see my characters—all of them, living, surviving, suffering only to continue their path to survival. That song demonstrates who they are at their core and what makes them unique. Waves are a constant; it rolls back only to push forward. The song tells me that life has its up and downs, and we control if the wave drags us or caress us.

When I sit down and write, I usually have some type of background music. Well, until I write an action packed scene. I purposely change to fast-pace techno or fighting music. For those, I typically go to YouTube and listen to videogame OST. Coincidentally one of my main monsters is heavily inspired by the headless horseman, and the soundtrack I play is of a boss fight who is the same. I listened to it for hours as I develop the fight scene, and now when I think of that part of the book, I go directly to the soundtrack.

As for my characters, I can say that Ruffus’ theme songs are “Don’t Let Me Down (feat. Daya)” by The Chainsmoker and “Reality (feat. Janieck Devy)” by Lost Frequencies. It explains his luck and happy go lucky attitude in life. Erol would be “Elastic Heart” by Sia as he has a pretty violent past and “Shut Up and Dance” by WALK THE MOON since he does not think and always acts. Their relationship is one of music, and when I think of both of them, I can’t help and smile and imagine all the other songs I have for them.

When I write my blog, I usually listen to chill-out music, but today I decided to listen to all these banging tracks and decided to end this blog in the next few sentences. Why? Because I want to get up and sing. Music brings everything to life, short and simple.
